The .22 Remington Jet, also known as the .22 Jet or .22 Centerfire Magnum, is a centerfire cartridge introduced in 1961 by Remington Arms. It was originally designed for the Smith & Wesson Model 53 revolver. The cartridge is a necked-down version of the .357 Magnum, necked down to accept a .222-inch caliber bullet. The design allows it to achieve high velocities, typically around 2,460 to 2,600 feet per second with a 40-grain bullet.
The .22 Remington Jet is primarily used for varmint and small game hunting due to its high velocity and flat trajectory, making it effective for shooting at longer ranges compared to other .22 caliber cartridges. Because of its bottleneck design, it requires careful handloading to prevent issues like case setback that could affect performance.
In addition to revolvers, there have been a few rifles chambered for the .22 Jet, although it remains predominantly associated with revolver use. Despite its niche applications, it never gained widespread popularity and is considered somewhat of a specialty cartridge today.
