The 8mm Lebel cartridge, also known as the 8x51 R Lebel, was introduced by France in 1886 and is notable for being the first smokeless powder cartridge in military use. It was originally designed for the Lebel Model 1886 rifle and features a rimmed case with a bottleneck design.
The cartridge uses an 8mm (.323 inch) diameter bullet and has a case length of 50mm. The early versions used a round-nosed bullet, but later iterations, such as the Balle D, introduced a spitzer (pointed) bullet to improve long-range performance. This ammunition was used extensively by French forces through World War I and into World War II, eventually being phased out in the latter half of the 20th century.
Despite being technologically advanced at the time of its introduction, the 8mm Lebel's rimmed design and relatively short case made it less suitable for use in automatic weapons, limiting its versatility compared to later cartridges. Today, it is primarily of interest to military historians and collectors.
