The 7.65×53mm Argentine Mauser cartridge, also known simply as the 7.65mm Argentine, is a centerfire military rifle cartridge that was developed in the late 19th century. It was first adopted in 1889 by Belgium and subsequently used by several other countries, including Argentina, hence the name.
The cartridge features a rimless, bottleneck case and typically fires a .311 inch (7.92mm) diameter bullet. Original military loads fired a 174-grain FMJ (Full Metal Jacket) bullet at a velocity of around 2,650 feet per second (fps), delivering considerable stopping power and effective range.
It was primarily chambered in the Mauser Model 1889, Mauser Model 1891, and later the Mauser Model 1909 rifles. These firearms were used extensively in various South American military forces and saw action in multiple conflicts throughout the 20th century.
Today, the 7.65×53mm Argentine is mostly of interest to collectors and historical reenactors. Ammunition can be found, but it is less common than more widely used calibers. Some hunters also use it, appreciating its performance comparable to the .308 Winchester for medium to large game.
Military surplus rifles chambered for this cartridge can sometimes be found on the collector market, often in varying states of preservation.
