50 Beowulf

New drawing Coming

Designed in 2001, as a means of allowing maximum fight-stopping potential in a cartridge that will function in the AR-15 platform, the 50 Beowulf uses a case with a larger body than the conventional belted magnum (0.54-inch) and a rebated rim to match the conventional AR bolt face (0.378-inch). Case length was adjusted to allow convenient use with likely 0.500-inch diameter bullets creating cartridges that will fit and function through standard length AR magazines (up to 2.26-inches).

Because of the larger case body, owing to bolt-strength limitations, maximum working pressure for the round is 33,000 psi. Despite the limited pressure and cartridge length, the 50 Beowulf generates muzzle energy exceeding standard 45-70 factory ammunition, making it a formidable hunting round. Recoil is significant, especially in a lighter AR. The semi-automatic mechanism might reduce the harshness significantly but overall recoil momentum is still impressive.

Reloading for the 50 Beowulf is easy. A sufficient variety of commercial cast and jacketed bullets is available and the handloader can cast bullets of any feasible design and weight, all it takes is a custom bullet mould. Many propellants deliver good ballistics.

As with most large-caliber chamberings, well-built guns are typically surprisingly accurate. The issue for most shooters is learning how to consistently address the gun at the bench. When the shooter combines good loads matched to the gun and good bench technique, it is surprisingly easy to obtain excellent accuracy.

The text associated with the cartridge description reflects opinions and conclusions of the author, M.L. (Mic) McPherson. Lee Precision and its employees do not necessarily either agree or disagree with any of his comments. We present these with due deference to his recognized expertise in the firearms field. His acumen extends to handloading and all aspects of ballistics - internal, external, and terminal.
