The .338-06 cartridge, also known as the .338-06 A-Square, is a wildcat rifle round based on the .30-06 Springfield case, necked up to accept .338 inch (8.6 mm) diameter bullets. This cartridge combines the excellent case capacity and versatility of the .30-06 with the increased bullet weight and diameter of .338 caliber bullets. The .338-06 was standardized by the A-Square company, although it remains less common compared to mainstream cartridges.
Use cases for the .338-06 primarily include medium to large game hunting, as it offers a good balance of manageable recoil and sufficient power. It is particularly suitable for hunting animals like elk, moose, and bear within moderate ranges. The bullet’s greater diameter and higher sectional density enable deeper penetration and better energy transfer upon impact, which is advantageous in hunting scenarios. Overall, the .338-06 is favored by hunters who desire more power than the .30-06 Springfield but wish to avoid the heavier recoil and gun weight associated with larger magnum cartridges.
