28 Gauge

28gauge

Gauge: Gauge denotes the number of lead balls of bore diameter that equal one pound; 28 gauge corresponds to a nominal bore diameter of about 0.550 in.

Length: It is commonly chambered in 2¾ in (70 mm) shells, with 3 in (76 mm) magnum variants also produced.

Shot Sizes: Typical shot payloads are lighter than 20 gauge, often around ¾ oz to 1 oz of lead shot. Ammunition is available in birdshot, buckshot (less common than in larger gauges), and slugs (also less common).

Applications: The 28 gauge is valued for relatively mild recoil, efficient patterns with appropriate loads, and light, fast-handling guns. Common use cases include upland bird hunting (e.g., quail, dove, grouse, pheasant with suitable loads and ranges), clay target sports (notably skeet), and small-game hunting.
