The 8×60mm S (also known as the 8x60mm Mauser) is a rifle cartridge that was developed in Germany after World War I. It was designed to comply with the Treaty of Versailles, which restricted the use of military calibers in Germany. Essentially, the 8×60mm S is a modification of the 7.92×57mm Mauser (8×57mm IS) by lengthening the case by 3 mm to a total length of 60 mm.
The cartridge features a .323-inch (8.2 mm) diameter bullet and is otherwise very similar to its predecessor. This makes it compatible with 8×57mm IS Mauser rifles that had their chambers reamed out to accept the longer cartridge. It is used in both hunting and sport shooting and provides good performance with a range of bullet weights.
Typical use cases for the 8×60mm S include medium to large game hunting, particularly in European contexts. The longer case allows for slightly higher powder charges, potentially offering better velocity and energy compared to the 8×57mm IS.
Please note: Always use ammunition that is safe and appropriate for your specific firearm, and consult a gunsmith if there is any uncertainty.
