The 7x57R Mauser cartridge, also known as the 7x57mmR or 7mm Mauser Rimmed, is a rimmed, bottlenecked centerfire rifle cartridge. It is essentially a rimmed version of the 7x57mm Mauser, originally developed by Paul Mauser in 1892.
The 7x57R is primarily used in break-action rifles, such as single-shot or double rifles, and combination guns (rifle-shotgun hybrids). Its rimmed design makes it particularly suitable for these types of breech-loading firearms which rely on a rim to extract spent casings more reliably.
The 7x57R offers moderate recoil and excellent accuracy, making it well-regarded for hunting medium to large game, such as deer, wild boar, and even larger animals like elk. It typically fires a 140 to 173-grain bullet at velocities ranging from 2,300 to 2,700 feet per second, providing a good balance of power and manageable recoil.
The cartridge is especially popular in Europe but is less common in other parts of the world compared to its rimless counterpart, the 7x57mm Mauser. The 7x57R remains a favored choice among hunters who use traditional break-action firearms.
