format_quoteIntroduced in 2023, the 7mm Precision Rifle Cartridge (PRC) has the same things going for it the other PRC chamberings do: superior precision in chamber and cartridge dimensions and a modern rimless case design with reasonable body taper, a sharp shoulder, and sufficient capacity to produce ballistics comparable to most 7mm Magnums.
The only downside of the case design is the same one so many of these new and otherwise nearly ideal case designs share, the neck is foolishly short and, in this instance, for no good reason at all. By simply driving the shoulder back about 0.1-inch, the resulting design would have a long enough neck to encourage decent barrel life and the loss of usable capacity would make no discernable ballistic difference. Most likely, the modest reduction in boiler room would result in improved ballistic uniformity and accuracy with available propellants.
Those who have read several of my discussions in this project will notice my complaint about the neck being too short is a recurring theme and that I am not shy about mentioning it. Design matters.
An ideal design for a bottlenecked rifle cartridge does exist and that design always includes a reasonably long neck. How long the neck needs to be to maximize barrel life remains a mystery but I can say with certainty that up to at least 0.3-inch, longer is better and no deficit exists with even longer necks, up to about 0.4-inch or about 1.5-times bore diameter, whichever is greater.
