format_quoteIntroduced in 2000, the 338 Remington Ultra Magnum (RUM) is logically the best chambering in the RUM line. The smaller-caliber versions are simply too much of a good thing and, with the propellants now offered, do not give enough performance edge over Magnums in the same caliber using significantly smaller cases to offset the disadvantages; at least that is one man’s opinion.
The 338 RUM, on the other hand, is a fine chambering. It comes close to matching 338 Norma, 338 Lapua, and 338-378 Weatherby capacity, and with high working pressure, performance is impressive. With the high-BC bullets now offered, it can deliver more energy at 500 yards than any safe and feasible load in the 300 Win Mag develops at the muzzle!
Powerful and flat-shooting, recoil is an issue for some shooters but with a good muzzle brake in a rifle of reasonable weight it is tolerable. The 338 RUM is serious medicine, ideal for use against the biggest species in North America and many large species, worldwide.
